all the way from new zealand to the urban landscapes of berlin, simon beeston is a man who likes diversity. this is not just evident in his choice of residence, but also in his musical output. following an ep on highgrade digital and a track on our various artists vol. vi record, simon now presents dusty back room, his first solo 12inch release on highgrade. the ep opens with the title track dusty back room, a track of strings and stabs, and a sound not exactly typical of previous highgrade releases. but when the music comes with such compelling energy and provocative atmosphere, were prepared to make an exception. new zealand meets berlin as we cast an eye over green landscapes and ocean swells, while the bumpy groove intoxicicates us with its magic spell. that simon beeston is a man of great contrast is clearly evident on the b-side with neon cringe and cymbolic. the percussive heat of the club brings us back from the organic landscape of his homeland and into the neon lights of the night. neon cringe resonates with a healthy dose of acid pump, while cymbolic provides a bass driven journey complete with cut up vocals and blistering cymbal rolls. this is a release that richly deserves its round number: highgrade number 70. especially with the addition of the bonus digital track tough luck, another highlight all of its own.

roughly translated, hasta el fin means >the very last number of the night<, appropriate when you consider this is gigolos final release of 2009. the a&r process at gigolo is a constant and very simple formula! if hell likes it, plays it and gets a good reaction from the crowd then it needs to come out on his record label! no other record fits the criteria more the >hasta el fin<. this is a record that featured heavily in hells festivals and club sets and was played at the end of every after-hour he found himself. but its beginning is a little less finite.
the genesis came late last year when oliver ton invited various musicians for a jamming session. in the spirit of some masterful moments in music oliver ton and production partner ronald christoph captured something unique sounding with a dance record built largely around a vocal, guitar and piano performance. it was immediately signed to berlin based white records and assigned the fitting cat. no. of white999!!!

synth mistress lakaband launches her label mekalaka with the electronic goodness of >i have to dance<. after years spent honing her craft at her base in east london surrounded by analogue gear lakaband is now ready to deliver her own unique take on electronic dance. starting things in fine style, the title track blends raw drum machine rhythms with bubbling 303, off kilter synths and understated vocals to create a paean to the call to dance. on remix duties is elusive dissident recording artist gweilo, turning in a pulsing, synthetic disco dub. rolling bassline and a tough linn drum groove underpin the chopped up fx drenched vocals. with plenty of future releases lined up there is much, much more to come from lakaband. stay tuned

joss moog drops his 1st solo ep on minority after having successful previous outings on robsoul. fat mamma is a jacked up chicago track that will be doing the rounds with the likes of derrick carter & mark farina. rhodes trip is armed with deep chords and slick beats and is reminiscent of room 25. everything inside has all the right ingredients to kick start a party, tough beats, smooth vocal stabs and a killer bass line. joss finishes the ep off in style with a big jazz bass line, groovy keys and a hypnotic sax that would work the dance floor at any time of the night.

rebolledo is an artist from xalapa, mexico, who is very much part of the comeme family of latin american artists. he s been around from the early days when he used to provide music for the buenos aires based bumbumbox street parties. so far he s had tracks on previous comeme releases, notably pitaya frenesi, but this is his first full release on his own. rebodello is the consummate comeme artist, with a quirky sense of humour, a unique latin american approach to dance music and a lean lo-fi approach to track making that is built to cut through on any sound system. lead track >guerrero< follows in comemes now established strange sense of humour, guerrero means warrrior and is a track about a >guerrero< who comes out at night and dresses in leather, it s all shouted vocals simple beats and 80s style synths. venganza y seduccion means vengeance and seduction and features suggestive panted echoing vocals over a cosmic disco bassline, while atmospheric chords build in the background, if this sounds strange it s because it is, but the combination works really well in a club.
the b side of the record is much harder and more techno-like - marchante is completely different, aggressive kick drums, a pulsing bassline and siren-like synths bring this track a panicked feel, which is offset by the way the drums build into tough patterns. raid features strange nonsense vocals over a pulsing rhythm track that reminds of old chicago acid, if it wasn t for the strange atmosphere. rebodello is a very welcome addition to the world of dance music.

to those of you who know your techno, shawn rudiman should be a well-known name. a prolific producer, he has nevertheless always kept his quality control on a tight leash, and releases on 7th city, technoir audio, integrated, dust science & matrix (amongst others) have brought him a reputation of being one of the finest producers around of contemporary detroit style (aka melodic) techno. a nice taster on the last minimalsoul release (sashimi hi) has hence led on to a full ep, and its classic stuff...tough beats and esoteric but catchy melodies all tied up with an expansive production ethic make for a great listen, and (perhaps unusually with this style of music) for a great dancefloor experience too!

some serious biznizz goin on here, no doubt - elementals brand new 12 inch for reduction brings some major, dirty break-step action to the floor, phat-ass, squelchy, distorted, squashed low-end and rollin beats make for two dark and heavy drops. this is the kind of style that wears its junglist roots on its sleeve, with a real, late night warehouse rave nastiness - and we totally love it. elementals growing reputation for tough dubstep cuts is supported by a succession of releases from him for labels such as audio freaks and urban graffiti, he s had tracks appear alongside scuba on hotflush, released with caspa & rusko (dub police / destructive), been remixed by boxcutter, and featured on fabric live.32 mixed by tayo. bristols reduction label first debuted with a plate from wedge (paradise lost / z-audio) featuring a remix from gatekeeper (soul jazz / tempa). here they bring a prime slice of local talent from a west country city positively teeming with innovative music.

altair nouveau is among the spaciest of dfaÆs recent signings, a producer clearly as in love with the soundtracks of john carpenter as he is with italo covers of classic rock tunes. >space fortress< saves its best for the final two minutes with a synthesized trumpet lead thatÆll have you either pumping your fist or reaching for the off switch. >showdown<, meanwhile, more adequately gets at mitchellÆs soundtrack love, with its pleasantly percolating backing track giving a chance to various sounds to prove their worth. >sorcerer< embraces the hints of flourish that mitchell dropped in spots elsewhere, and goes full-on with the funk. itÆs tough, well-produced and a little bit funny to listen to in the privacy of your own homeùjust like the 80s soundtrack music that it so readily recalls.

steve angello returns to his own size records, only this time accompanied by his brother, an21. flonko is a massive, klezmer style track that has been bubbling under for some time and is now here! essential new tune on pete tongs essential selection already, the sound of a gypsy summer is here. still staying true to steves recent tech sound, the underbelly of this track is tough and dark lifted but the klezmer melody. an absolute essential summer track!

finally its ready. a brilliant 12inch from one of detroits most respected producers, anthony shake shakir. this is the full release of a super limited white label that dropped earlier this year. a tough and ballsy 12inch - going everywhere from off key house and electro bullets to steppers/near photekish-dubstep. ridiculous. this will appeal to fans of his output on his own frictional label and open eared people with a love for solid electronic music! morphine continue to kill it.

walter mecca releases his debut 7 inch on favorite recordings! he is a real breath of fresh air, as are other label artists such as onra, yann kesz, dwilt sharpp and lorett fleur. watch out featuring jessica pepper is the dope title track, a tough but heavily boogified future classic! the other side is the beautiful track pleasure, including soulful outerspace grooves and an awesome melody that really grow on you. this track is a must have.

r.a.w. the heavyweight label from guy mcaffer is back, now in its tenth year the label continues to deliver quality london style techno to the world. guy a.k.a. the geezer has been responsible for some of the finer moments on great london techno labels such as stay up forever, cluster, routemaster and smitten. on this release guy teams up with another legend from the stay up forever family, ant man behind the powertools label. on the a its an all out hard funk assault with a honkytonk piano style riff set over tough loops and 909 drums. on the flip its a powertools style synthesiser fest with quaking beats

sven tasnadi is a producer who, with every release, audibly and gracefully takes his style down the many different avenues of house and techno cityà his latest, brave work for poker flat then could perhaps be described as a midnight drive down main street, tempted by and lingering at some of the darker side streets, yet journeying on regardlessà.! its a fantastic ride from tasnadi, that sees two versions of the title cut plus a perfect b side track included for good measure. >habanero< is a tough, tracky concoction of thick bass led percussion, warbling, building sci-fi synths and classy hi-end hats. the unmistakable groove begins low and simply builds upwards, creating a 10 minute cabride through ultra-modern tech house, cuba style! we wont spoil the fun with the tingling breakdowns key momentà but theres also a (without trumpet) version on the b1à.! carrying on the chunky, dramatic vibes, >piri piri< dubs things out as a blissful and unique synth line carries this beautiful journey track along its honest and respectful path. a wonderfully resolute deeper moment from tasnadi, the phasing vocal stutters and pads play together with the central in delightful harmony, reminding us of the producers ear for touching and timeless arrangements

on their introductory minus ep, click box offers a refreshing return to a bygone era of classic instrumentals, full of experimentation and passion generated by that ongoing love affair between man and machine. berlin shades starts out in a jittery minimal fashion but soon dives much deeper as the tough electro bassline expands and contracts dragging the dancer to and fro. the cascading hook and in-your-face sci-fi synth motif add a sense of tongue-in-cheek drama to a dynamic arrangement that incorporates steep inclines, sharp drops and snaking pathways. as the short staccato bass riff gains momentum and the hook comes round for the second time you just know somethings lying in wait and the boys certainly dont disappoint. lost road is anything but a blind alley, kicking off with some low-slung interplay between a two-note bassline and a whiplash snare that dishes out a serious spanking. hi-hats fizz across the audio spectrum, cleverly pitching up and down before a drunken bass sequence ushers in the main section with its sliding, twisted synth distortions primed for surprise and immediate disorientation. once all the elements are in play, the fun really starts with so many objects of interest competing for attention. the arrangement is pulled and pushed to great effect extracting maximum effect from this tough little unit. more electro flavour to the fore as the loose, broken beat intro and robot sounds of some toys make for some slick moves on the dancefloor. the retro synth riffs and dark spiralling pads conjure up images of some early 80s lab full of computer kids in white coats twiddling knobs on huge mainframe monoliths. the bouncing bass and analogue belches make this a must for all retro-tastic electro-boogie fans. the theme continues over into voxer as rising filtered bass tones playout over another trademark click box drum pattern, this time doused in heavy reverb and delay. an array of analogue bleeps, screams and laser beams keep the motor ticking over.

the mighty umek gets first crack at c est la vie, turning in a typically straight to the point remake, dropping the distinctive percussive hook over a jackhammer groove. ortin cam (drumcode) adopts a more minimal approach with firing snare rolls and a distorted, buzzing cutup loop of the original hook. rounding out the first part of this package is xpansul (ovum, soma) with a dramatic, stringladen take that bounces along on a tough but funky bassline.

when he isnt busy touring and recording with various artists as a session drummer (most recently with one beyonce knowles) guillaume jambel aka giom djs and produces deep house music. with only a handful of releases and remixes under his belt on labels such as amenti music, black cherry, tango, eight tracks and aroma its obvious that he is eager not too to spread himself too thinly. this makes us even more privileged to get him onto ornate music. and he certainly doesnt disappoint on blue matter ep which kicks of with bring down the walls a deep house disco builder promoting us to... you guessed it bring down the walls. with a metro area style bass line, warm keys and popping percussion this is bound to make you do exactly thatàin fact it should probably come with a public health warning. i know you were right, probably not something we say very often but here giom says it like he means with a tough kick drum, sweet seductive female vocal, bubbling bassline and a whole heap of other good stuff thrown into the mixer. this phat slab of deep house will brighten up the cloudiest of days, have a listen im sure you ll agree. hailing from brighton c soul are magnus asberg (head honcho of on the house records) and jimmy day. they have appeared on labels such as diy discs, suspect package and have also collaborated with house music legend robert owens on german label plastic city. for c souls on the house remix of i know you were right they strip it right down to the bone and produce a haunting, electronic house music rework. you know we were right!
